How to play Liar's Dice
- Every player starts with five dice and a cup. Everyone shakes and looks only at their own dice.
- The first player makes a bid about all the dice on the table, such as "four 3s", meaning at least four dice show a 3.
- The next player either raises the bid (more dice, or the same number of a higher face) or calls "liar".
- When someone calls, everyone reveals. If the bid was true, the caller loses a die. If not, the bidder loses one.
- Lose all your dice and you're out. The last player with dice wins.
Using the odds
With ones wild, each hidden die has a 1 in 3 chance of matching any face other than one, so you can expect about a third of the unseen dice to match. If there are 12 hidden dice, about 4 of them will match on average. Bids well above that are worth challenging.
